BBTCEP is available via a variety of teaching materials including face-to-face teaching programmes, written support and self-directed learning materials, and an interactive eLearning resource, www.learnbloodtransfusion.org.uk. The programme is now available in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

The materials cover a wide range of transfusion related topics, including safe transfusion practice, blood components and good manufacturing practice.

Current Modules

Module 1 Safe Transfusion Practice (Standard)

Course Overview: This is the foundation module of the programme and covers the correct procedures for requesting, sampling, collecting, administrating blood components and monitoring the transfused patient.

Target Audience: All staff groups involved in the administration of blood components, including medical and nursing staff, operating department practitioners, clinical support workers and porters.

 

Module 1 Safe Transfusion Practice in the Laboratory

Course Overview: This module promotes safe practice in the transfusion laboratory and covers the key issues in specimen reception, handling blood samples, serological testing and issuing blood components.

Target Audience: Biomedical scientists working in the transfusion laboratory.

 

Module 1 Safe Transfusion Practice in the Paediatric Setting

Course Overview: This covers the correct procedures for requesting, sampling, collecting, administrating blood components and monitoring the transfused patient, highlighting issues specific to paediatrics.

Target Audience: All staff who work in the paediatric setting including medical and nursing staff, operating department practitioners and clinical support workers

 

Module 2 Blood Components and Indications for Use

Course Overview: Covers the constituents of blood components and summarises the indications for use, the therapeutic risks and benefits and the management of adverse events.

Target Audience: Clinicians, nurses and operating department practitioners who regularly use blood components in their day-to-day practice.

 

Module 3 Appropriate Transfusion Practice

Course Overview: Consists of four scenarios dealing with the transfusion management of a patient with acute myeloid leukaemia, experiencing a massive haemorrhage, requiring a total hip revision arthroplasty and requiring cardiac surgery (there is no formal assessment for this module).

Target Audience: Specialist registrars, doctors and nurses who are regularly involved in the management of patients requiring transfusion support.

 

Good Manufacturing for Hospital Blood Banks

Course Overview: This module has been developed  to provide a basic understanding of the principles of Good Manufacturing Practice for Hospital Blood Bank staff as imposed by the United Kingdom Blood Safety & Quality Regulations (2005), as amended, (BSQR 2005).

Target Audience: All staff in Hospital Blood Banks.
