The Better Blood Transfusion Programme works in partnership with the Donor Services Direcorate and the Blood Express Project within the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service to undertake a range of initiatives that cover the vein to vein process from donor to patient.

BBTP's area of expertise relates to blood data management or the development of a sustainable system that provides information about the clinical use of blood. The blood data management system , which is known as the Scottish Epidemiological Database (STED), has been established to:

• Identify variations in practice
• Encourage clinical review of blood use
• Contribute to the goal of reducing avoidable transfusions
