A number of PhD projects are currently being undertaken under the Clinical Effectiveness Programme.

Implementation of NICE Guidelines for routine antenatal anti-D prophylaxis (RAADP)

Overview: the main aim of this research is to examine the implementation of guidelines for routine antenatal anti-D prophylaxis in the clinical area.

Objectives of the PhD are to:

  • Document the current extent and level of implementation of the guidelines
  • Explore how clinical midwifery practice influences the quality of care provided for RhD negative pregnant women

The Scottish Transfusion Epidemiology project: The epidemiology of blood transfusion in Eastern Scotland in 2000

Overview: the Scottish Transfusion Epidemiology Project (STEP) was a feasibility study initiated in November 2002 and developed into a PhD in 2004. The study relates to blood component use for transfusion for hospitals (mainly Eastern regions) that represent approximately 54% of the red cell units supplied by the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service to hospitals in the year 2000.
